The new SD8-24 (a smaller frame sized SD-8), has a fixed architecture powered by Stealth Digital Processing™ and employs a smaller Super FPGA than the SD7, yet it benefits from all the major features and versatility of the acclaimed DiGiCo D Series, plus the advances already made in the SD7. This gives a superlative performance to price ratio, allowing DiGiCo to offer an entry-level console, with remote pre amps, at a price point that has never been possible before.
Worksurface
The same attention to detail and ease of use has been applied to the SD8-24, as to every other console in DiGiCo’s portfolio. Thus, the SD8-24’s control surface has 25 motorised faders, dedicated and multi-function control knobs and electronic labelling. It also has a 15”, super high resolution, touch sensitive TFT LCD backlit display.
The SD8-24 has 12 main channel faders and 12 assignable aux and touch sensitive master faders. Each bank of 12 faders can be instantly assigned as channels or masters, allowing all 24 main faders to control inputs if desired, while any bank of 12 can be assigned to the touch screen for fine-tuning.
Engine
The SD8-24 provides, as standard, a 16 x 12 output matrix, its 12 busses being additional to the console’s 24 stereo, solo and master busses. 60 mono or stereo channels – the equivalent of 120 channels of full DSP processing - and the combined power of the SD8-24’s technologies means that the number and quality of effects, dynamics or other functions is available to all channels simultaneously, no matter how the console is set up.
The SD8-24 supplies engineers with a wealth of features, some of which, such as snapshots and the ability to record directly from the remote mic pre amps will be familiar to D Series users. The high resolution, 20-LED bargraph meters, right beside each channel fader are a new feature.
But familiar or not, one thing that is certain is that the only feature the SD8-24 lacks is a big price tag. In fact, it comes in at a considerably lower cost than anything else in the DiGiCo range - or any comparative console for that matter - but still provides much, much more than its nearest rival.
I/O
The SD8-24 has integral I/O within the worksurface, which are:-
- 8 Mic/Line Inputs
- 8 Line Outputs
- 8 AES/EBU (mono inputs and outputs)
The standard SD8-24 system is supplied with a MADI Rack and 100m of BNC cables. The MaDiRack is 8U 19”rack mount and houses 48 fixed Mic/Line Inputs and 8 Outputs. This can be increased up to 24 Outputs.
As with all DiGiCo products, both the Mini Rack and DiGiRack may also be used.

It is the sheer number of inputs. We used to use an analogue desk, but now the place would just be full of frames because we have maybe 40 or 50 vocal channels, 60 or so orchestral channels and then effects returns. You end up with well over a hundred inputs and on an analogue desk that just physically too big.

I was at the launch of the original DiGiCo D5 at AES in 2004 and was blown away at the sound and accessibility. It was out of our price range, which left certain other options more financially approachable, but compromised with the two problems noted above. The SD8 provided the known DiGiCo advantages at a price that fit our budget and it’s still the real deal.
